Kabretwa Clinic

We had our first clinic this past Saturday!!!
This meant stuffing 16 people in a 15 passenger matatu and driving for over an hour over VERY bumpy roads up to Mt. Elgon.   All of us mazungus had our teeth involuntarily clenched but I noticed that the Kenyans never stopped talking the whole way there.
I felt a little overwhelmed at first when the doctors and nurses were setting up stations in the host church.  What could I do to help?  So, for most of the day I played outside with the kids, again employing bubbles and even the bubble caps for fun games.  The people here are so friendly and kind.
In the afternoon, I helped at the wound-care station.  Mostly this meant cleaning and bandaging infected cuts.  It's amazing how many of these wounds could have been avoided by proper cleanliness.  We served over 230 people before we had to close the doors and drive home.
This may have been my favorite day so far and I can't wait for the clinic this weekend.

Uniform Day!!

Today was uniform day for the baby class at school!!  I had been looking so forward to this day.  :)
The little children came into the classroom where two buckets of water were waiting.  We washed them from head to toe and then dried them and rubbed them down with Vaseline.  Boy did they shine!! Some hadn't bathed in who knows how long!  Then we dressed them in their beautiful new uniforms and gave them shoes and backpacks.  They look so happy in all of their pictures.  We were also able to give them candy and biscuits.  A happy Friday at school for the little Kenyan kids.
The most beautiful thing was to see them all pray and thank their Father God for all the good things that happened to them today.  All so beautiful.

We're landed!

HELLO EVERYONE!!!!!    HABARI  ZENU??  (how are you all?)
I am so happy to finally be able to write to you!
The whole team has settled nicely into Kenya.  After two flights totaling 15 hours and a very squished and bumpy 8 hour car ride we are happy to be at our compound.
The weather has been beautiful: sunny and warm.  We have already been to town several times, on piki-pikis (motorcycles) and in taxis.
We went to church on Sunday.  It was so awesome and strengthening to see people on the other side of the world worshipping the God who made it.  The kids at the pre-school were so precious!  A sea of beautiful, smiling children.  I was blown away by how easily we could make them happy.  Katie brought two containers of bubbles and when we started blowing they screamed and danced and were so excited!
I have already seen and done so much here and I know that there are many things still coming. I am so thankful that the team I am with is so loving and happy and God-focused.
I plan to update you again and more frequently and add pictures in the future!
Until then "Mungu aku bariki!!" (God bless you.)
